Customer Rating: Summary: This unit is a lot of fun & they sell at a good price Comment: Once you figure this player out, it is actually very easy to use. People get stuck because you have to do things like hit pause before you push the menu key. They need a good MP4 for dummies to show people how to use the unit. Once you figure it out, I think it is a LOT of fun for the money. My wife and son are all excited. I download the video with a one click downloader. Public domain of course :) Then the program comes with a very easy to use converter. After that you just move the file from your computer to the player and your good to go. My wife got stuck because she tried to play the "music" but I explained to her she had to go to video and play the video. Soon she began to understand how easy they are to use. But they are small. They only hold 520 MB, that is around 50 3 min videos. Or around 100 MP's. Also Sony is not that much more and you get a lot more battery and a lot more GB's with Sony. They say that the unit is 4 MB but that is Mega BITS not Bytes. I think it is a great toy, a lot of fun and fairly decent quality. But be careful, don't leave it pluged into your computer or you may start to have problems with your USB. Better to unplug it after you download the files and use the wall outlet to charge the battery. The conversion software is great. Very easy to use and will do a bunch of files at once. There is a lot of Christian and worship music in the public domain that is free and you can distribute and share it all you want. This could be a great missionary tool to distribute sermons and worship videos. Of course they will be a lot better when they put in a memory card slot, to get over the memory problem of only 3 hours of video and 6 hours of music. Some of them are already putting a memory card reader on them.
Customer Rating: Summary: Beware of hacked Memory Comment: This player is very small much smaller than the picture makes it look like. For me this was not a problem, actually I like that. The menu are slow to react, not a big problem, but if you have had a faster player you might be annoyed. The screen quality is not great but not horrible, for such a small screen and price range. In other words is adequate. Mine came with a Silicon cover, you can find them at eBay for this player. Search for MP4 silicon cover. A silicon cover could help protect your player and it's screen.
I compared screens with my friend's LG phone and the screen it's just no way near as good as his 50 bucks phone. Maybe not a fair comparison but I also compared it to an old no name brand 1GB MP4 and that old one had better screen quality. My old player also had a SD card slot, very handy. However, my old one died, I try to install a lanyard and used a metal pin, it went into the player by mistake, lol and I shorted. It's now in MP4 AKA Chipods' heaven. The player reviewed here does not have a SD card slot, then again I thought I was getting a 4GB player and that most likely would have been enough, I'll explain next.
The biggest problem I had was with the actual memory, it was sold to me as a 4GB MP4 but it's a hacked 2GB Player. Many of these China made MP4 are hacked (ALL SIZE HAVE BEEN REPORTED HAS HACKED). How do I know? I started to have problems when the content in my MP4 exceeded 2GB. I did a search on line and came upon a fact about many of these Chipods player from China. A lot of them are hacked to seem bigger than their actual size. As a matter of fact I found on line a site that is to report hacked Chipods to ebay and ask eBay to track down these seller. I signed it, maybe it will help someone later. Windows would read mine bigger than it really is in my case it read it as a 4GB when in reality is a 2GB. So, when you reach their true max you may begin to experience some problems with them and, for what I have read, it shortens their lives. Some may even go for a while before acting up. Here is a link to find out if yours is a hacked mp4: http://www.mympxplayer.org/how-to-removing-memory-hack-vt2400.html .
Check it out, specially if you already have one and like it to have a long happy life. Maybe you can get at least a partial refund, I did. Once I removed the hack it worked well but I lost the games it had in it. The menu will still be there, it won't be removed by removing the hack. It will also remove your music and for that matter anything you've added to the Chipod, so back it up.
Adding music is easy, converting videos is another matter But not impossible. I would recommend to anyone having problems installing videos to Google it (use Chipod, MP4 from china, etc), rather than using the lame manual. In short your movies/video need to be in FLV, the format used a lot by YouTube, or AVI. I use a free software called BAMVC for converting to amv. To convert to AVI if your movies/video are not in that format you'll need a different software. I'm using Xilisoft for that. Works well and fairly fast, nevertheless not free. With BAMVC I chose the size of the screen and resolution. I selected for this Chipod 1.5 to 1.8 at max resolution and it works well. I will most likely buy another MP4 or wait for the MP5 to come down in price. I would like the next player to have a SD card slot, a Bigger screen (at least 2.5"), a 3.5" audio jack, for better sound and of course more memory.
Now that it works well, after the hack removal,a big complaint is the sound quality. My wife has a simple MP3 only player made by PQI called the Joytone and it sounds so much better than this. Amazinly, it cost her 19 bucks out the door. It uses a SD Card, which it comes with a 2GB card. We figured if it stinks we'll at least have a 2GB card for our digital camera. Back to the Chipod, as mentioned the player's sound quality is not very good at all. I tried upgrading the headset, with the included audio jack converter from 2.5 to 3.5 standard, but it's still not good a bit better with the originals. Yet the after matket Headset work fantastic with my wife's Joytune of course her MP3 has the standard 3.5" audio jack.
My second gripe is the memory size. Mine ended up being a true 2Gb after removing the hack just like the one advertised here, if the one sold here really is a 2GB. I had in mind adding a couple of movies/half hour shows, my music, eBooks and Podcast for the road but specially for our doctor's appointments. I figured I needed 1.5GB for music more or less and the rest for tv shows, movies, podcast and even eBooks. But with 2Gb I have to constantly remove music for adding video shows, depending how long I think I'll be at the doctor's office, lol
Podcats is my next honorable mention, adding Podcast was not an easy task in windows. Since I had never done it before it was an unfamiliar task to me and like anything new it takes time to learn. I ended up using my Linux/Ubuntu system to add podcast with Rhythbox 0.11.5, works intuitively. I have not used my Windows XP for it, Just to lazy besides it already work easily in Ubuntu. Recently, a friend told me he found a program called Juice to add podcast to his genetic MP3 player in Windows XP, which by the way also works for Linux since is Open Source. You go figure! Open Source to the rescue!!!,lol Thank God for Those people working hard to offer free stuff such as applications and Operating Systems. A big thanks to them all!!! Nevertheless, I have not use it in Windows but he claims it's easy.
Last but not least, I have added .txt files (ebooks) and they are crappy, meaning I can't read them correctly at all. Maybe that's another Google search for later. Perhaps I need something I'm not aware of. So far eBooks is the only thing I have been unable to use correctly. I have not put the time necessary to solve the problem. Maybe later I'll figure it out!
Customer Rating: Summary: Good, but you do need to read the manual RTFM! Comment: I read a few other reviews on this item and I found them accurate for the most part.
This is a nice little unit, very small and lightweight.
The interface is not intuitive. It is hard to work with and requires reading the manual for the most part. The software is translated from another language and the translation didn't come across well.
This unit is feature-packed. (In reading the manual I found out it even has Karaoke)
The blackout mode after 9 seconds is annoying. To turn it off, Menu->Setup->LCD Set->Black, set it to 0. (This is an example of bad translation, I probably would've chosen "Blackout" or "Blank Mode" or "Timeout" or "Power Save")
Another poster commented on needing the smaller earphones for this. I bought mine from Pro_eb and it included a converter so standard earphones can be used.
Contents in the box from seller Pro_eb:
1 MP3 player
1 Mini-USB to USB cable
1 Power to USB converter (for wall charging)
1 Manual (RTFM)
1 Pink shiny carrying bag (quickly hidden to avoid ridicule from my teenage son)
1 Stereo earphone headset with built-in volume control
1 Stereo jack converter (from little to standard headphone size)
Seriously, if you do not believe in reading the manual, do not buy this.
Customer Rating: Summary: Needs FW Improvements Comment: This product is nice and slim, plays well too. However, I have noticed some bugs with the FW, and some items that I have seen in other, equally priced players.
While reading text files, at times the formating goes heywire and treats whole sections of text as a single line, that cannot be read.
When going through directories/files, the selected directory does not scroll so that the entire title can be read.
I live in a dry region. It seems that these players are sensitive to ESD. Luckily, the vendor (Pro_eb) did a wonderful job of replacing the one that was zapped.
For the price, not bad, but could use improvements.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fast delivery, exclenet product and great support Comment: I liked this product a lot. My sons have downloaded a lot of Music, video clips. For the service support and quickly atention I will definitly recommend to anyone.
I found this current company is very responsible and helpful.
